Holly Dunn: Accelerando

Interview with Accelerando Alumni Holly Dunn

With applications for the 2024 Accelerando Program now open, we thought we’d chat with program alumni Holly Dunn. Studying Interactive Composition at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, she is bluegrass artist forging her own creative path in the industry. As part of the Accelerando program, Holly was involved in industry workshops, instrumental lessons, mentor sessions and a performance in the Primrose Potter Salon.

When were you part of the Accelerando program?
I joined accelerando in 2022 and finished my time in the program at the end of 2023.

What are you doing now?
I’m currently studying Interactive Composition (Bachelor Of Music) at Melbourne University.

When did you first start playing?
I first started playing music when I was 7. I started with piano and branched out over the years to ukulele and violin before settling with guitar.

Who are your musical heroes?
Early bluegrass artists like Tony Rice and Norman Blake inspire the way I play and approach my instrument, but I’m also continually excited by new players and innovative artists such as Blake Mills who seamlessly switches from minimalistic playing to a more maximalist approach in many of his works.

What has been your performance highlight so far?
My favourite performance so far has been the 2023 Accelerando Recital, because it gave me the opportunity to play my own piece with some incredibly talented musicians who are well known in the Bluegrass scene. Performing with them was really inspiring.

How would you describe your overall experience in the Accelerando program?
Hugely inspiring and educational. It’s provided me with some key insider knowledge into the music industry, and helped me to discover new pathways towards a dream career.

What did you enjoy the most about the Accelerando program?
Getting to play with and learn from brilliant musicians who have years of knowledge and experience has been my most cherished part of the program. Learning through watching great players has taught me so much and it has been quite a moving experience forming friendships with these teachers.

What skills did you gain from having sessions with some of Australia’s top performers and educators?
My playing improved massively through actively performing and practising with top players, but my confidence also increased and I have since found myself taking more risks in playing and improvising. Sessions with my Accelerando mentor also allowed me to make more connections within the industry and local scenes, which has proved helpful in making more likeminded friends and finding a path towards a career in music.

What is next for you in your music journey?
I plan on honing my skills in composition while studying music at university, and finding a place for my pieces, or another media form to create for. Along the way I’d love to continue meeting and playing with inspiring performers.

Why should students apply for Accelerando in 2025?
Being a part of the program has given me access to a wealth of important information and advice to support a career in music. The Accelerando program is excellent for those aspiring to forge a path as a musician or worker in the field. It allows you to hone your skills as a performer, while also considering your place in the music industry as a larger force. And alongside the many learning opportunities are the incredible friendships you make with likeminded individuals, that motivate and encourage you.
