Andrew Blanch & Emily Granger – Suite Mágica
Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre
Details
Bask in the fresh instrumental pairing of guitar and harp.
Armed with formidable talent, passion, and conviction, guitarist Andrew Blanch has carved out his own path with a musical vision that equally values both the tradition and the inherent potential of this continuingly evolving artform.
American-Australian harpist Emily Granger effortlessly straddles the worlds of classical and popular music. With past performances including glittering appearances with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, singer-songwriter Sarah Blasko and soprano Renée Fleming, Emily’s considerable talent finds her equally at home in intimate chamber recitals and thrilling performances of daring new works.
About the concert
Their performance in the Primrose Potter Salon, held on the same day as the launch of their album Suite Mágica, pairs the extraordinary combination of guitar and harp with a selection of works that display the energy, versatility and beauty of these much-loved instruments – delivered by two of Australia’s most captivating performers.
Rarely seen together, this instrumental pairing is at once both fresh and familiar. Side by side on stage, the instruments face each other like an enchanted reflection – with striking visual and aural similarities. In this way, the sound world created by these two plucked string instruments is not dissimilar to that of a guitar duo – the harp, with its 47 resonant strings and a collection of extended techniques, providing an expanded range of expressive possibilities to the more common two-guitar pairing.
Join Andrew and Emily as they share some of the finest music from their explorations, including exciting new commissions by Australia’s leading composers, arrangements of popular favourites, and more.
Presented as part of Melbourne Recital Centre’s Exquisite Classical Experiences stream. Emily Granger appears courtesy of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.
