Mostly Mozart – Glories of the Clarinet

Mostly Mozart – Glories of the Clarinet

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre & Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM)

Details

With technical brilliance and delicate harmonies, this hour-long performance showcases the glory that is the clarinet.

Musicians from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), alongside Finnish director/clarinetist Christoffer Sundqvist, present two of the earliest works in the modern clarinet canon.

Considered one of the leading clarinetists of his generation, Christoffer has held the position of Principal Clarinet with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2005 and performs regularly with orchestras throughout Europe. With his ‘outstanding soloist’ (International Record Review) credentials, Christoffer directs ANAM Musicians through Bernhard Henrik Crusell’s Clarinet Concerto No.2 – the first of two works in this program of passion and virtuosity. Considered a clarinet celebrity in his day, Crusell’s deep understanding of the instrument’s capabilities is illustrated through the haunting beauty and rich tapestry of his often-forgotten concerto.

In a seamless blending of soloist and strings with unparalleled musical elegance, Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet is often considered the jewel in the composer’s late Chamber Music crown. As the intimate dialogue between clarinet and string quartet begins to unfold, so too do the intricacies and tenderness of Mozart’s signature compositional style.
