The University of Melbourne Wind Symphony – Bookmarks
Presented by Melbourne Conservatorium of Music
Details
The University of Melbourne Wind Symphony presents its second concert of the academic season, Bookmarks.
Just as bookmarks help mark pages in a book, they are also important for marking life experiences — especially those we don’t want to forget. The inspiration behind Julie Giroux’s fourth symphony, Bookmarks from Japan, was a gift of six bookmarks featuring famous works by Japanese artists. The concert ‘bookmarks’ the range of emotions and imagination of some significant Australian and international composers. Shostakovich’s tone poem October symbolised an ideal new world of freedom and fellowship in Russia. For Percy Grainger, his Children’s March was bookmarked with the dedication ‘for my playmate beyond the hills,’ a Scandinavian beauty with whom the composer corresponded for eight years but did not marry because of his mother’s jealousy.
Join them for a vivid exploration of bookmarked ‘life experiences’ also featuring other Australian composers David Stanhope and Mark John McEncroe.
