Rose Riebl – Do Not Move Stones

Rose Riebl

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre

Details

Rose Riebl takes audiences on a deeply introspective, soulful and cinematic journey.

Following sold out shows in Melbourne, Sydney, London, Paris and Reykavic, pianist and post-classical composer Rose Riebl presents original compositions from her debut album, do not move stones. Described as ‘shadowy and haunting’ by The Irish Times, Riebl’s compositions extend her intimate relationship with the piano into a realm of fragile and soulful works that guide the listener into vulnerable and emotional spaces.

About the concert

Joined by a cello trio, these works draw influence from Romantic classical composers Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Chopin, with a contemporary and minimalist take. Defined by critics as ‘a distillation of decades of engagement with music, literature and art’, Riebl’s performance in the Primrose Potter Salon will be an evening of cinematic, minimalist and transcendent instrumental works.

Praise for Rose Riebl

‘Riebl’s sound is three-dimensional. The edges of her notes are rounded. This gives her the capacity to express enormous depth, complexity and variability in tone, emotion and meaning. When she touches a piano it’s with full intent; she’s always saying something. An Ending, Go Back to the Beginning achieves a Rachmanoniv-like depth of feeling. This melody feels elemental, like water pulled from deep beneath stones and earth: it’s a distillation of decades of engagement with music, literature and art. When I listen to this music, I feel like something has been understood, and I am changed.’ – The Monthly

Reviews

‘The music on this release is less “neoclassical” and more cinematic, layered, ambient, and thoughtful. There are climaxes of deft precision and fomenting energy, but also moments of serenity, introspection, and beautiful silence. This is an album of focus, stillness, and reflection.’ – Progmind

‘Here, the sparkling piano keys, weaving in the plush bed of organic reverb, carry and lift the soaring strings into a poignant dance, that is at once a little melancholic and triumphant in its song. Echoes of romantic classical composers, Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky and Chopin, return in ghostly melodies that pluck at the emotions in your heart, recalling false memories of our past lives, when sitting in a concert hall was enough to be transformed with only music.’ – Headphone commute
