About the concert

One of the most popular works of the chamber repertoire, Schubert’s Trout Quintet is not only delightful, playful and lyrical but profound and friendly.

Double bassist Stevie Newton, fresh off his performances as tenor soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will sing Die Forelle (The Trout) in place of the last variation of the 3rd movement, in which the quintet is a transcription of Die Forelle.

Opening this concert is Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A minor, written just after the composer found out he had a terminal illness. Full of depressed hope, it displays every gamut of human emotion, pure beauty, love and loss.
