Ensemble Gombert – Commemorating Byrd & Weelkes

Ensemble Gombert

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre & Ensemble Gombert

Details

A fitting tribute to two of the finest composers of the Renaissance.

Ensemble Gombert is Melbourne’s outstanding chamber choir, renowned for its pure intonation and historical approach to choral sound and style. Named after Nicolas Gombert, the Ensemble specialises in a cappella performance of Franco-Flemish music of the High Renaissance.

About the concert

William Byrd and Thomas Weelkes died 400 years ago in 1623 – Byrd in his 80s and Weelkes at age 47. To commemorate these two stalwarts of the repertoire, Ensemble Gombert have curated a program that celebrates a variety of their choral works. The two centrepieces of the program are Byrd’s Te Deum and Magnificat from his Great Service and repertoire that has affirmed Ensemble Gombert as masters of their craft. These works are complemented by popular favourites including Byrd’s Sing Joyfully and Weelkes’ Hosanna to the Son of David, plus other beloved anthems of Elizabethan and Jacobean repertoire.

Praise for Ensemble Gombert

‘Closing my eyes, the music swept me far away to a time and place when those who first heard this work were certain of the divine and hopeful of their place in an afterlife where the angels would surely sing like this.’ – Patricia Maunder, Limelight Magazine
