Claire Cross – Sleep Cycle

Claire Cross by Michelle Grace Hunder

Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre & Claire Cross

Details

An audio-visual portrayal of the phases of human sleep.

Claire Cross is an award-winning Australian electric bassist and composer. Her compositional work focuses on creating immersive and ambiguous worlds, drawing on influences of folk, minimalism, jazz, and chamber music to create deeply textured and transfixing soundscapes.

About the concert

Joined by an eclectic ensemble of some of Melbourne’s most innovative young improvisers, Claire’s performance in Primrose Potter Salon presents an audio-visual portrayal of the phases of human sleep.

Graphs of human brain waves recorded during the various phases of sleep will inform the score, blending electronics and acoustics to create a deeply textured sound world. The ensemble will traverse the patterns, peaks, troughs and rhythms of brain wave activity as they move through the movements of the Sleep Cycle, from wake to REM.

Seamlessly inhabiting the worlds of free jazz, experimental avant-garde and art music, their performance features live projected visuals that complement the improvising group, creating an immersive multisensory experience of the Sleep Cycle score.

Praise for Claire Cross

‘Claire Cross is one of the most restless creative people in Melbourne today. As a jazz-and beyond bassist, she will blow your mind; as a composer and bandleader, she has created a sonic world of her own.’ Australianjazz.net
