‘The sashaying, lively energy pouring from the stage carried the most wonderful quality of glamour and vibrance, as though the sound itself were radiating the ruby sunlight of a Brazilian beach bar. In particular, Kerr on drums and Boden’s pulsing, propulsive piano combined to give the pieces a fantastic sense of vigour and character.’ – Beat Magazine
‘...a tasty selection of these timeless tunes performed by some of the best musicians we, and the world, have in this genre.’– The Clothesline

Panorama Brasil draws on the diverse musical landscape of Brazil: music from the bars and clubs of Rio, from the streets of Salvador, and from Brazil’s rich folkloric history. Experience the sophistication of bossa nova, MPB, and Brazilian jazz, alongside the earthy sounds of samba, and Brazil’s incredible regional styles.
Based in Melbourne, this ensemble is equally at home in jazz clubs, concert halls and street festivals. The core ensemble is joined by a stellar cast of special guests, including Brazilian singers Dany Maia and Alda Rezende, and leading Australian vocalists and instrumentalists, including Jacqueline Gawler and Doug de Vries.
In 2024, Panorama Brasil performed with Orchestra Victoria at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, presenting Australia’s first-ever orchestral performance of Tom Jobim’s music. Other major performances include the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Stonnington Jazz, and Adelaide Cabaret Festival. They have presented many major concerts dedicated to the works of great Brazilian artists, including Jobim (Adelaide Cabaret Festival), Baden Powell’s Os Afro Sambas (touring with Alda Rezende), Clube da Esquina (Melbourne Recital Centre), and the ongoing series Brazil’s Modern Poets (music from Brazil’s leading songwriters post-1970).
Musical Director of Panorama Brasil is drummer/composer Alastair Kerr, a long-time student of Brazilian music, who is recognised as one of Australia's leading exponents of Brazilian percussion and drumming. Alastair has performed and recorded with many leading Brazilian musicians, both in Australia and Brazil, including Paulo Aragão, Hermeto Pascoal, Assanhado Quarteto, Anna Setton, and Marvio Ciribelli.
